Hess-Olesen earns ITA Player to Watch award
AUSTIN, Texas – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has selected Texas freshman Soren Hess-Olesen as the ITA Texas Region Player to Watch by way of his results from the 2011-12 season.
The ITA Player to Watch award is bestowed upon a player who is expected to be one of the top returning players in his region next season and is expected to contend for an ITA regional title. Players must have been ranked nationally to receive the award. Hess-Olesen now advances to the award’s national ballot. The national winner will be announced on May 22.
Currently ranked 73rd in the latest ITA singles rankings, Hess-Olesen (Aarhus, Denmark) finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 20-13 overall singles record, including a 9-8 mark at No. 1 singles, a position he held throughout the dual-match season.
Hess-Olesen posted wins over three ITA top-100 opponents – North Carolina’s 29th-ranked Jose Hernandez, Texas A&M’s 34th-ranked Alexis Klegou and Tulsa’s 95th-ranked Clifford Marsland. He also reached the finals in the main singles draws at the Southwest Shootout and the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational last fall.
