No. 11 Texas Falls to No. 13 Texas A&M, 4-2 at ITA National Indoors
Sunday, 02/10/2013

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 11 Texas (2-2) won the doubles point and tacked on a singles win from junior Elizabeth Begley, but No. 13 Texas A&M (3-1) defeated the Longhorns by a 4-2 count Saturday evening in the consolation round at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Texas will play its final consolation match of the tournament on Sunday at 11 a.m. Central against Alabama.

Texas opened the match by winning the matches at first and second doubles to claim the doubles point. UT’s Breaunna Addison and Noel Scott led off with an 8-6 upset win over A&M’s seventh-ranked tandem of Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov at first doubles.

UT’s Annat Rabinovich and Lina Padegimaite trailed A&M’s Maria Ines Deheza and Maria Paula Deheza through much of the match at third doubles but managed to force a tiebreaker. A&M’s Deheza twins won the tiebreaker, but Texas followed by winning at second doubles to seal the doubles point. Texas’ Elizabeth Begley and Aeriel Ellis trailed A&M’s Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun Wen before evening the match at four games apiece. UT picked up the service break it was looking for and held on for an 8-6 win to give Texas a 1-0 lead in the match.

Texas A&M evened the match at one-all behind the third-ranked Sanchez-Quintanar’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over UT’s Ellis at first singles. The Aggies assumed a 2-1 lead when Hristov posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over UT freshman Lana Groenvynck at sixth singles. Texas responded at fourth singles, where Begley registered a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Maria Ines Deheza to even the match at two apiece.

Texas A&M closed out the victory by winning the ensuing decisions at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively. Urbina gave the Aggies a 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over UT’s Addison at third singles. Texas’ Scott dropped the first set to A&M’s 45th-ranked Stancu at second singles and forced a second-set tiebreaker. Stancu, however, took the tiebreaker to close out the match, 6-4, 7-6 and give the Aggies the fourth and match-clinching point. The match at fifth singles was abandoned, given that the final result was in hand.
