Golden Hurricane Surges Past No. 35 Rice, 5-2
Tulsa, Okla. – The 29th-ranked Tulsa men’s tennis team defeated 35th-ranked Rice, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Seniors Arnau Brugues and Alberto Sottocorno both earned singles wins in the final regular season home match of their careers.
Tulsa improves its record to 17-8 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA, while the Owls fall to 13-9 and 2-1 in conference action on the season.
The Golden Hurricane grabbed the doubles point with a pair of wins in the bottom two positions. Philip Stephens and Ashley Watling defeated Bruno Rosa and Isamu Tachibana, 8-5, in the No. 2 slot, and Marko Ballok and Arnau Brugues topped Sam Garforth-Bles and Christian Saravia, 8-6, in the third flight.
Tulsa continued to dominate in singles action claiming four out of six matches. Senior Arnau Brugues, the second-ranked singles player in the nation, defeated 48th-ranked Christoph Muller, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 1 position to push his singles record to 35-3 on the season. Junior Philip Stephens upset 46th-ranked Bruno Rosa, 6-3, 6-4, in the second flight to defeat his second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent, and improve his singles record to 17-10 on the year.
Senior Alberto Sottocorno topped Tobias Scheil 6-7, 6-4, 10-6, in the No. 3 position, and freshman Ashley Watling defeated Sam Garforth-Bles, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 4 slot to round out the singles wins for the Hurricane.
No. 29 Tulsa closes out its regular season schedule on Thursday, April 9, against 30th-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
