No. 32 Tulsa Crushes Oral Roberts, 7-0

The 32nd-ranked Tulsa men’s tennis team sent its senior class out in dominating fashion with a 7-0 win over Oral Roberts on Tuesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Seniors Arnau Brugues and Alberto Sottocorno picked up wins in both singles and doubles in the final home match of their careers.

 

Brugues, the nation’s top-ranked player, also broke the school’s all-time single-season wins record with his 6-0, 6-1, victory over Dmitry Suslov in No. 1 singles, moving his record to 37-3 on the season. With the win, he surpasses Nenad Toroman’s record of 36 singles victories set during the 1996-97 season.

 

Tulsa (18-9) captured the doubles point with wins in all three positions. The Hurricane’s third-ranked duo of Arnau Brugues and Philip Stephens defeated Oleksandr Kotsuik and Dmitry Suslov, 8-2, in the top position, and 86th-ranked James Seagraves and Alberto Sottocorno dropped Dario Beslic and Andrey Savin, 8-2, in the No. 2 slot. Marko Ballok and Rusty Turpin completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory against Alexander Dargel and Peter Sullivan in the third flight.

 

Tulsa continued to dominate in singles winning all six matches. Arnau Brugues easily dispatched of  Dmitry Suslov, 6-0, 6-1, in the top flight, and freshman James Seagraves followed quickly with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Carlos Salazar in the No. 6 position.

 

Junior Marko Ballok clinched the win with his 6-2, 6-2, victory against Dario Beslic in the fourth slot, and freshman Ashley Watling topped Oleksandr Kotsuik, 7-5, 6-4, in No. 2 singles to extend the Tulsa lead to 5-0.

 

Freshman Wojciech Starakiewicz defeated Andrey Savin, 6-4, 6-3, in the fifth slot, and senior Alberto Sottocorno beat Alexander Dargel, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0, in No. 3 singles to wrap up the 7-0 win.

 

Tulsa is back in action this weekend when they head to the Conference USA Championships on April 17-19 at UCF in Orlando, Fla.
