 Conchie Shackelford
The best coach in Sewanee women's tennis history, Conchie Shackelford is in her 18th season at Sewanee (2003-04). Her career record (17 seasons; 1987-2003) is 291-116 (71.5%). John Shackelford, Conchie's husband, is in his 19th year as the Sewanee men's tennis coach. His career record is 283-165 (63.2%). A native of Jacksonville, N.C., Conchie earned her bachelor's degree in 1982 from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, majoring in business. She played varsity tennis at Jacksonville High School and UNC-Wilmington. She and John have four children; Avery, 11, Sadie, 10, and Michaela, 8 and Tessa, 2. Shackelford’s guiding philosophy has been to combine hard work and fun with each student’s educational experience. “Our girl’s are committed to our success, balancing the fun and companionship of competing in intercollegiate athletics with the dedication necessary to compete at the highest level of Division III competition while working toward a world class education.
