TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Following several road tournaments, the Alabama men’s tennis team looks forward to hosting its one and only event at home this season in the Crimson Tide Fall Championships. Action will be held at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium, Recreation Courts and Hank Crisp Indoor Facility. A total of 116 players representing 18 institutions will travel to the University of Alabama for the three-day event.
“We’re excited to once again host our annual Crimson Tide Fall Championships,” said head coach Billy Pate. “We have another strong field and look forward to our guys getting lots of great competition. This will be our last event of the fall as a team, so it presents another good opportunity for some of our guys to improve and establish themselves in our lineup for the spring season.”
The tournament features eight singles draws with 16 competitors in each and two doubles draws of 32 teams each. There will also be a consolation round for both the singles and doubles play. The 18 institutions represented at this year’s Fall Championships are Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia Southern, Illinois, Jacksonville State, Jacksonville University, Memphis, Mississippi State, Samford, South Florida, Southern Mississippi, Troy, UAB, UT-Chattanooga, UT-Martin, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.
Alabama is represented by 10 players in singles matches and five pairs in doubles competition. Billy Mertz and Mathieu Thibaudeau will play in the Bear Bryant Draw, John Lewis in the John Hannah Draw, Dan Buikema and Andrew Felsenthal in the Johnny Musco Draw, Trey Walston and Michael Jung in the Joe Namath Draw, Ricky Doverspike in the Ken Stabler Draw, Creighton Blanchard in the Gene Stallings Draw and Houssam Yassine in the Steadman Shealy Draw. Felsenthal and Lewis will play in the Red Doubles Draw along with Saketh Myneni and Buikema and Doverspike and Thibaudeau. Jung and Walston will pair up in the White Doubles Round as will Blanchard and Yassine.
The tournament will open with the first round of doubles and first two rounds of singles on Friday. Saturday will feature the doubles round of 16 and quarterfinals along with the semifinals of singles play. Competition will wrap up Sunday with both the semifinals and finals of doubles along with the singles finals. Matches begin at 9:00 a.m. (CST) each day.
