Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 23 Kentucky on the Road

The University of Alabama women’s tennis team fell in a 5-2 decision today to the 23rd ranked Kentucky Wildcats at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
The Tide, 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the SEC, picked up two singles victories and sent two other matches to a third set before falling to the higher ranked Kentucky. Freshman Tiffany Welcher continued her winning streak as she defeated No. 83 Sarah Woestmann 7-6(5), 6-3 from No. 1 singles. Alabama junior Shelley Godwin also picked up her third consecutive win at No. 6 singles over Lauren Meier 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomores Paulina Bigos and Alice Tunaru picked up wins in the second set against their opponents but eventually fell in the third set.
In doubles, Kentucky took the point by defeating the Tide at all three positions. The freshman duo of Meritt Emery and Welcher held on to sent their match to a tie breaker but fell 7-4 in the effort.
The Tide returns home to host the 11th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores Sunday at the UA Varsity Courts. Live statistics will be available for the match.
