Alabama Women’s Tennis to host 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women’s tennis team, due to its final ranking this season, will serve as one of the 15 host sites for the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend, beginning January 25. The Crimson Tide finished the season at No. 11 in the Campbell/ITA Division I Women’s Poll, which is its highest final standing in program history.
“We’re looking forward to hosting the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “This is a prestigious event that attracts the nation’s best. This team has worked assiduously to earn the privilege to host another national tournament at The University of Alabama. It’s been a compilation of putting one good season on top of another good season.”
A total of four teams will compete at each site, as Alabama, the No. 1 seed in Tuscaloosa, will be joined by Tulsa, Clemson and Memphis, which are listed according to rank in the team draft. Tulsa and Clemson both finished in the top 25 following the 2012 season, at No. 23 and No. 25, respectively.
Each team is guaranteed two matches, and the team that wins both of its matches will advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, which will be held at the Boar’s Head Tennis Club on the campus of the University of Virginia, Feb. 8-11.
Because ITA Kick-Off Weekend ultimately determines those that will advance to the indoor championships, all matches will be played in the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
“We’re enthusiastic about showcasing our first-class indoor facility,” Mainz added. “This is absolutely one of the most exceptional indoor tennis complexes in the country. It’s college friendly and spectator friendly and infuses an electric environment for the players. We’re expecting a thrilling weekend of college tennis.”
