Tide off to a Solid Start at Furman Fall Classic
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Alabama women’s team got off to a great start at the Furman Fall Classic, winning six matches on Friday. The Crimson Tide collected two wins in doubles, while the remaining four came in singles.
The event kicked off with two rounds of doubles where Mary Anne Macfarlane and Maya Jansen picked up the first win of the day, topping North Carolina’s Lauren McHale and Caroline Price, 8-3. Macfarlane and Jansen would be edged out, 8-6, in their second match to Tennessee’s Caitlyn Williams and Joanna Henderson, who now advance to the finals. Emily Zabor and Yasmeen Ebada fell, 8-4, in their first match to Clemson’s Tristen Dewar and Yana Koroleva, but came back in their next match to beat the Lady Volunteers’ Mimi Fotopoulos and Tiffany Tavares, 8-3, to move onto the consolation finals.
In singles, Macfarlane came back from a first-set loss to down Koroleva, who is ranked No. 7 in the ITA’s freshman/newcomer rankings, 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, while Jansen posted a 6-3, 6-3, win over Furman’s Michele Stanford. Natalia Maynetto also came up with a huge win, beating the 10th-ranked newcomer in the Tar Heels’ Ashley Dai, and Ebada advanced in her draw by way of default over Furman’s Jenny Porter. Rounding out the singles matches for the Tide was Zabor, who was edged out by North Carolina’s Tessa Lyons, 6-4, 6-4.
Matches will resume on Saturday morning with the final round of doubles followed by the second round of singles.
