Seven Bulldogs Advance At ITA Regional
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-----Seven members of the Georgia men's tennis team won their opening round matches at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at Florida State University on Friday.
Hernus Pieters, Nathan Pasha, Austin Smith, Ben Wagland, Eric Diaz, Marco Nunez and Garrett Brasseaux advanced to the second round, which will begin Saturday at 9 a.m., and the winners will play again later in the day in the round of 16.
Third-seeded Pieters defeated Georgia Tech's Garrett Gordon, 6-4, 6-4, eighth-seeded Pasha beat Miami's Marco Stancati, 6-4, 6-2, while Smith downed Everth Dzib of South Florida, 6-3, 6-2, and Wagland cruised to a 6-4, 6-4 win over Miami's Omar Aly. Smith and Wagland are among the players seeded 9-16.
Diaz rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Georgia Southern's Andrew Dromsku, Nunez outlasted Florida State's Andres Bucaro, 6-4, 0-6, 7-6(8), and Brasseaux beat the Seminoles' Michael Rinaldi, 6-4, 7-6(5).
In doubles, the second-seeded team of Garrett Brasseaux and Nathan Pasha won two matches to reach the quarterfinals. They first defeated Rayane Djouad and Marco Osorio of Georgia Southern, 9-8(3), then cruised past South Florida's Federico Sabogal and Everth Dzib, 8-1.
"A lot of good things happened today," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "We had a terrific day in singles and some really great battles by our guys. We lost a couple of close matches in doubles, but still played well. We're coming along as a team. Our challenges will be tougher starting tomorrow, but we are excited about the great opportunities we have."
In other singles action, Will Oliver and Casey Kay dropped their opening round contests after winning two qualifying matches apiece on Thursday. The Bulldogs are a combined 11-2 in singles after two days at the ITA Regional.
Eric Diaz and Ben Wagland also won a pair of doubles matches before being edged by Florida's No. 4 seeded team of Michael Alford and Florent Diep, 9-8(8).
Play continues Saturday in Tallahassee with two rounds of singles followed by the doubles quarterfinals. The singles and doubles champions of the ITA Regionals earn an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York.
