Abdelnour Ends Run in Big Ten Indoor Singles Semifinals
Monday, 11/05/2012

MADISON, Wis. - Fighting Illini senior Bruno Abdelnour won in the singles quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon before falling in semifinal action.

"In Bruno's first match, he really played well," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "Things were coming together for him. Today was a good lesson for Bruno. You can lose it as soon as you get it. The second match was unfortunate for him, but he learned a lesson that I hope won't be repeated for the rest of his Illinois career. You can't always control how you play, and sometimes, you have to deal with it on that day."

Abdelnour, who was seeded third in the tournament and ranked 120th in the nation, cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over eighth-seeded Szymon Tatarczyk of Purdue to advance to the tournament's semifinals. There, he dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to fifth-seeded Oskar Wikberg of Wisconsin, marking the end of both his tournament run and fall season. The Aleppo, Syria, native finished the fall with a 5-5 mark in singles play.

Sophomore duo Tim Kopinski and Farris Gosea will return to action this week to compete for a national doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 8-11 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The pair earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional doubles title in mid-October.
