Abdelnour Advances to Singles Quarterfinals
MADISON, Wis. - Fighting Illini senior Bruno Abdelnour advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the Big Ten Indoor Championships Saturday at the University of Wisconsin, while he and sophomore Ross Guignon claimed the consolation title in doubles play.
"I think Bruno lost a little focus in the middle of his match but managed to take down a feisty player," associate head coach Marcos Asse said. "I give credit to his opponent, Chris Jackman, who fought pretty hard. It certainly wasn't an easy task for Bruno."
Abdelnour, who is ranked 120th in the nation and seeded third in the tournament, breezed to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Iowa's Dominic Patrick to advance to the round of 16, where he faced 12th-seeded Chris Jackman of Northwestern. The Aleppo, Syria, native edged Jackman in a tight 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 battle to earn a spot in Sunday's quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, ninth-seeded Guignon captured a 6-4, 6-3 win over Hawkeye Garret Dunn in his round-two match but fell to sixth-seeded Sidarth Balaji in the following round.
"Ross just needs to get a little bit of his sharpness back after taking some time off," Asse said. "Today did that for him a little bit. Unfortunately, he didn't get the win, but he got a couple more matches in."
Freshmen Alex Jesse and Julian Childers each lost in the round of 32, falling to the consolation bracket, where Childers defeated Wisconsin's Alexander Kokorev before losing to second-seeded and 66th-ranked Aaron Pfister of Michigan State. Jesse's first-round opponent in the back draw advanced by default.
"Alex was one of the bright spots of the day," Asse said. "Even though he lost, he started playing the way I know he wants to and the way we want him to."
In doubles action, Abdelnour and Guignon won the back draw with a convincing 8-0 victory over Penn State's Chris Young and Guanhua Chen.
"It was great to see Ross and Bruno win their doubles match and rebound after the loss in the first round," Asse said. "That's not always the easiest thing to do, but they did a good job and started settling in."
Abdelnour will return to action in the singles quarterfinals tomorrow at 9 a.m. CT.
