EUGENE, Ore.— The University of Oregon men’s tennis team defeated the Portland Pilots, 5-2 Saturday in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks are now 10-1 and the Pilots fall to 6-4.
“We can’t take things for granted, we need to come out with more energy,” head coach Nils Schyllander. “We didn’t have the greatest week of practice and the guys need to learn that you cannot one day off mentally during the season.”
In doubles play, Alex Rovello and Daan Maasland defeated Michel Hu Kwo and Jackson Martin, 8-4 in the No. 2 spot in doubles. Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier fell to Alex Ferrero and Ratan Gill, 6-8 from the top spot. Aaron Clissold and Lova Randriamampandry had a heated match against Justin Guay and Kent Andreasen to determine the winner of the doubles point. Clissold and Randriamampandry won the match, 9-8 to give the Ducks the doubles point.
“I think Daan Maasland did a great job, he did a good job in the doubles and gave us a quick win in the singles to get us two points,” Schyllander said. “Alex Rovello did a great job against a tough opponent, he played a very competitive match and he played a pretty complete match. Of course for Lova (Randriamampandry) to come back from a 7-5 loss to win, it’s pretty impressive to never give up.”
In singles, Mullen in the top spot fell to Gill, 4-6, 2-6. Cambier handled Hu Kwo, 7-5, 4-1 in the No.2 spot and Rovello defeated Ferrero, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the third spot.
