UPSET CENTRAL FOR LADY VOLS
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The University of Tennessee women’s tennis No. 34 doubles team of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely had a tough test ahead of them in the main draw doubles tournament at the Riviera ITA Women's All-American Championships Thursday, and came out on top.
“Kata and Brynn did a great job today and played well all day long,” said co-head coach Mike Patrick. “We had a great day of playing the best, and defeating the best. They had a good win over a good team and battled the whole time against a doubles team that made it to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament last year.”
After winning out of their doubles qualifying bracket, the duo was slated to face No. 15 ranked Lauren Embree and Danielle Collins of Florida in the first round of the doubles main draw.
With momentum behind them, Boren and Szekely not only upset their Gator counterparts but did it easily downing Embree and Collins 8-3.
The victory pitted the Lady Vols against the No. 2 team in the country, Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez of UCLA in the second round of the tournament. The match, as predicted, was a battle and Tennessee came out the victor with a 9-7 win, marking the fifth straight of the tournament for the duo.
On the singles side of things, Szekely fell to No. 77 Li Xi of Virginia in the qualifying consolation round 6-2, 6-4 marking the end of her singles run in the tournament.
However, in her first singles match of the tournament, Boren battled to a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win over No. 16 Stacey Tan of Stanford.
The duo will continue doubles play tomorrow at 9 a.m. with yet another tough test, this time against the No. 5 Michigan pair of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender.
Boren will continue her task of taking on tough opponents when she faces No. 8 Sabrina Santamaria of USC in singles following doubles play.
