Somdev Devvarman Opens Australian Open With Straight Set Win
MELBOURNE, Australia - Former Virginia men's tennis All-American Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) recorded his third career Grand Slam singles victory with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 first round win over Bjorn Phau on Monday at the 2013 Australian Open. Devvarman, who advanced to the second round of the event for the first time in his career, will meet No. 24 seed Jerzy Janowicz of Poland in the round of 64.
Devvarman, who missed most of 2012 due to injury, posted his first Grand Slam victory since Wimbledon in 2011. Earlier this month he advanced to the second round of his hometown event, the Aircel Chennai Open, recording his first ATP Tour win of his comeback.
Devvarman is one of three Cavaliers competing in the first Slam of 2013. Treat Huey (Class of 2008) and Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009) are in the doubles draw where they play No. 4 seed Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau in the first round. It is the fourth consecutive Grand Slam that the duo has played together, highlighted by reaching the round of 16 at Roland Garros last year.
