Tuesday, 08/20/2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia men’s tennis player Jarmere Jenkins, who was honored as the ACC’s Male Athlete of the Year for the 2012-13 academic year, was among four ACC student-athletes that highlighted the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-Star Team.

Jenkins, who earned All-Star recognition in singles and doubles play, ended the 2013 season ranked No. 1 nationally in singles and No. 2 nationally in doubles. In addition to earning NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player honors as he led the Cavaliers to the national title, Jenkins was part of a national championship doubles team and was the 2013 NCAA singles runner-up.

Mac Styslinger, who teamed with Jenkins to win the national championship in doubles play, also was named to the ITA’s All-Star team. The Cavaliers duo reached the finals of the ITA All-American Championships and the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Together with Jenkins, Styslinger posted a 29-7 record in doubles action on his way to ITA All-America status.

In addition to Jenkins and Styslinger, the doubles combo of Duke’s Henrique Cunha and Raphael Hemmeler received All-Star honors.

The duo totaled 39 wins this season, which ranks them second in single season doubles victories in Blue Devil history. They won the doubles tournaments at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and the 2012 USTA/ITA Division I Carolina Regional Championships. The pair also reached the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championships.

The 2013 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team will be honored by the ITA on Saturday, August 24.

Featuring 20 of the nation's top student-athletes from tennis programs across the nation, the ITA
All-Star Team was inaugurated in 1984. The All-Star Team features the nation's top-ranked men's and women's players from the year-end ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO levels, as well as winners of the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and 2013 NCAA Division I Championships.

The 2013 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team awards presentation will take place at the ITA Awards Luncheon hosted by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, immediately before the start of the US Open. The luncheon is held in the President's Suite Dining Room at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
