PHONES

The camp office telephone number will be available in June. Please call our administrative office at 1-800-334-7827 to obtain it.

While there are no phones in the rooms, campers will have access to phones in the dorms to call home. Please send a calling card with your child to make long distance calls.

During the following hours, there will be a staff member available to take calls. At all other times, you may leave a message on the voice mail at the camp office and a staff member will return your call as soon as possible:

Monday – Friday 9 am - 12 noon;  3 - 6 pm;  7 - 10 pm
Saturday            9 am - 12 noon; 7 - 10 pm
Sunday              2 - 5 pm;  7 - 10 pm

Although we greatly encourage open communication between campers and our staff, it is important that you contact us immediately should your child notify you of any problems. This will give us the opportunity to correct the matter while your child is still at camp.

Parents of younger students are urged to limit their phone contacts with students while they are at camp. We strongly feel that telephone calls from campers to home or vice versa can contribute to homesickness.

MAIL

We will have a box at a local branch of the US Postal Service that may be used for mailing all packages, letters, etc. to campers. Mail is picked up each morning except Sunday. Campers are encouraged to bring stamps with them to camp rather than trying to purchase them at the post office. We will notify you of the address in the spring.

CAMP RULES

4 Star has important rules which help all students enjoy and receive maximum benefits from the camp. There is zero tolerance for the use of illicit substances such as tobacco, drugs, or alcohol. Gambling is not permitted. Students may not behave disrespectfully to staff members or to other campers. Students may not behave disruptively and/or in a manner which limits another student's enjoyment or learning. Curfews are listed in “a typical weekday”. A breach of any of these rules may result in expulsion of a student without refund.
LAUNDRY AND SPENDING MONEY

Laundry facilities are available in the dorms for a standard charge.

Spending Money- Parents may deposit optional spending money in the form of cash or traveler's checks for campers with the Camp Bank at check-in. Money would be needed for such extras as souvenirs, snacks, etc. The Camp Bank is open on a daily basis for campers to withdraw money. We recommend $50 per week.

MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS

4 Star requires a physical exam prior to arrival at camp. A current school year's physical will suffice.

A Medical Release Form, which needs to be signed by the healthcare provider and parents, will be mailed to you upon receipt of your deposit/application and is available for printing from: Medical Release Form.

The completed Medical Release Form needs to be returned to our office prior to June 20, otherwise your child will be examined by a doctor at camp at an additional cost of $100.

Injured or ill students will be given prompt medical attention; however, health and accident expenses are not covered in the tuition cost and will be passed along to the student's parents.

HEALTH, SAFETY, SECURITY

Routine doctor’s appointments while at camp are arranged through First Med.  For 24-hour emergency care, students are taken to one of two superb medical facilities within minutes of the campus:  University of Virginia Medical Center or Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Our staff will handle all arrangements for medical care including appointments, transportation, obtaining medication and follow-ups.  Parents are responsible for all medical bills incurred by students while at camp.

The safety and security of our students has been our number one priority over the past 25 years of operating camps.  Our well-trained staff are on-duty 24 hours a day both on and off campus.   Additionally, the University of Virginia provides electronically controlled entrances to all dorms.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Campers are housed in university dorms in the center of UVA grounds. Our residential staff acts as big brothers and sisters to students, yet also provides supervision and mentoring. Living in a dorm is a great way to meet new friends, have fun, and learn how to live in a group setting. Since most students come to the program not knowing anyone, each is assigned to a dorm group to facilitate meeting other campers. Each floor has its own Residential Advisor – experienced in residential life – and a better than four to one ratio of students to staff. In addition, the Executive Director lives at the dorms along with numerous Program Directors. This system was designed to ensure student safety, the absolute best supervision, and a feeling of friendship and interaction among students and staff.

The rooms are comfortable with beds, desks, bureaus and closet for each student. The university housekeeping staff cleans the bathrooms and common areas each day – you are responsible for keeping your own room clean.

The residents’ lounges are a great place to meet, play ping-pong or watch a movie. Right outside the dorms is the popular basketball court and lawns for volleyball and other activities. A large part of the program occurs at and around the dorms where friends, socializing, and memories flourish.

DIVERSITY

In our community everyone is welcome and respected.  Each year we attract young people from all over the country and the rest of the world - people from fascinating and diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. We are dedicated to providing an atmosphere of mutual respect and acceptance of people from diverse backgrounds.

DINING

Breakfast and lunch are served in one of two attractive, newly renovated cafeterias.  At breakfast you can choose both hot and cold options ranging from cereal and fruit to omelets. Lunches also offer a great variety of hot entrees, a salad bar, deli bar, pizza center, fresh fruit, and unlimited beverages, desserts, and more. Helpings are unlimited.

Dinners are special times at 4 Star. While we have some dinners at the cafeteria, each week we vary the occasion with cookouts, pizza parties and an Italian night. And on Thursdays, before the party, students enjoy our very popular tradition of dining out at popular restaurants in the area.

All meals while away from campus are also provided.

TENNIS CAMP

BASIC - For the beginning through intermediate student who needs work on the fundamental strokes before they can accomplish and enjoy the more advanced techniques of the game.  It incorporates all the features listed in above in a positive learning environment.  An average of 4 – 4 ½ hours of tennis daily plus optional extra help sessions.

TOURNAMENT PREP - Prepares students for tournament and school team play, whether a newcomer or veteran of the tournament circuit, including state, sectional, and nationally ranked players. The program includes the before-mentioned features, with emphasis on more advanced techniques and strategies; a weekly College Tennis Workshop for players interested in playing college tennis which covers:
When and how to contact school and coach.
How to get recognition from college coaches and what criteria a coach looks for in a recruit.
How scholarships are obtained.
We suggest that only those players willing to exert maximum effort should consider signing up for this program.  An average of 5-6 hours of tennis daily plus optional extra help sessions.

EVENING ACTIVITIES

Summer evenings are a time to relax, socialize, and have fun. We have planned an impressive schedule of “just for fun” activities including bowling, capture the flag, putt-putt golf, dinner out and shopping for souvenirs at UVA's Corner, camp basketball and ping pong tournaments, evening on ice (skating), "Make-Your-Own Sundae" late nights, at-camp and in-town movies, tie-dyeing, and more!

WEEKENDS

What will campers do on the weekend between each session?
A majority of campers attend multi-week sessions, usually 2 - 4 weeks.  We feel they need an exciting, fun-filled break from the intensive instruction received during the week.  We have planned  one-day excursions for Saturday and Sunday.

For multi-week students a fee of $295 per weekend will be added to the weekly tuition. DC
