Hickory, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team earned an 8-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University Thursday afternoon at Hickory High School. The visiting Bulldogs swept the six singles matches after taking two of the three doubles matches.
 
The contest was the league opener for both schools. Wingate improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The L-R Bears are 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs will play the University of Charleston (W.Va.) Sunday in Hilton Head, S.C. The match is slated for 11:30 a.m.
 
Wingate freshman Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) was one of three Bulldogs to win twice Thursday. Evers started the day by teaming with junior Samantha Alschlager (Indian Trail, N.C.) to take an 8-0 number two doubles victory over Lenoir-Rhyne’s Ivey Tant (Lansing, N.C.) and Cathryn Jarrett (Salem, Va.). Evers earned a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over L-R sophomore Kelsey Love (Port Orange, Fla.) at the number two singles flight.
 
Freshmen Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) also collected two victories each for the victorious Bulldogs. Wingate senior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) defeated Lenoir-Rhyne junior Emily Mauser (Hickory, N.C.) 6-4, 6-3 at the number one singles position.
 
Wingate will play four NCAA Division II matches during its Spring Break trip to Hilton Head. In addition to WVIAC member Charleston, the Bulldogs will face East Stroudsburg Monday, Bloomsburg Tuesday and Kutztown Wednesday. Lenoir-Rhyne visits SAC foe Tusculum College Friday at 4 p.m.
