#32 Wingate blanks Newberry 9-0 for 14th straight victory Saturday

Newberry, S.C.----The Wingate University women’s tennis team won its 14th consecutive match Saturday, blanking South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry College 9-0 at Cannon Courts on the Newberry campus. Wingate lost only three games in the five contested singles matches Saturday.

The number 32 team in the Campbell/ITA NCAA Division II national rankings, Wingate is 16-1 overall and 7-0 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 2-13 overall and 0-6 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit Coker College next Saturday at 1 p.m. Wingate’s Wednesday contest at Queens University of Charlotte has been cancelled.

Wingate senior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) and sophomore Kelli Ferguson (Concord, N.C.) started their day with an 8-0 victory over Newberry freshman Shannon McManus (Charleston, S.C.) and junior Lindsay Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) at the number one doubles flight. Stasikelis defeated junior Amanda Simmons (Saluda, S.C.) 6-0, 6-1 in the number one singles match. Ferguson topped Sam Parrish (Angola, Ind.) 6-1, 6-1 in the number five singles contest.

Bulldog freshman Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) improved to 17-0 in dual match singles play with her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Newberry sophomore Sierra Hoover (Duncan, S.C.) at the number four flight. Poole’s freshmen classmates Ali Evers (Roswell, Ga.) and Morgan Winston (Lawrenceville, Ga.) also collected 6-0, 6-0 decisions in the number two and the number three singles matches, respectively.
