WTEN: #32 Wingate clinches share of SAC title with 5-4 victory at Anderson (S.C.) Monday

Anderson, S.C.----The number 32 Wingate University women’s tennis team rallied from a 0-3 doubles deficit to take a 5-4 South Atlantic Conference victory over host Anderson (S.C.) University Monday afternoon at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts. The visiting Bulldogs have won 16 consecutive matches.
Wingate is 18-1 overall and 8-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs clinch at least a share of the 2011 regular season championship. Wingate shared the 2003 title. Anderson is 9-6 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. The Bulldogs host NAIA powerhouse SCAD Atlanta Friday at 1 p.m. The AU Trojans visit SAC foe Brevard College Tuesday (2 p.m. first serve).
The number 32 team in the Campbell/ITA NCAA Division II national rankings, Wingate lost the three doubles matches for the first time this season. The Bulldogs made a statement in singles, dropping only two sets to pick up the necessary five victories.
Anderson took a 4-0 lead after freshman Lauren Trumbull (Anderson, S.C.) defeated Wingate freshman Olivia Poole (Boca Raton, Fla.) 6-2, 6-4. Wingate senior Kara Stasikelis (Greer, S.C.) defeated Anderson sophomore Camie Beaulieu-Brune (Montreal, Quebec) 6-3, 6-2 in the number one match, leading the Bulldogs to the five straight-set victories and the match.
