Former Xavier tennis standout Doug Matthews is beginning his second season as the Musketeers' assistant coach. He previously spent the 2009-2010 season working with the Musketeers in a volunteer capacity. He also served as the staff professional at the Club at Harpers' Point.

Matthews was a member of the Xavier men's tennis team from 2005 to 2009. While at XU he compiled a 75-47 career singles record, which ranks fourth all-time at Xavier. In doubles, he ranks third all-time with a 75-52 career record and he is second all-time at Xavier in total wins with a 150-99 career record.

The long list of accomplishments Matthews earned as a student-athlete while at Xavier include being named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team four consecutive years, earning an Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Year award in 2006, and being named the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Performer in 2008 and 2009. Additionally, Matthews earned Xavier's Rev. Paul O'Connor Award, named after Xavier's 29th president, given annually to the university's male student-athlete that represents the ideal of the school based on academic and athletic excellence.

Matthews, a Maineville, Ohio native, was a two-sport star at Kings High School. He played No. 2 singles for the 2005 Ohio State Champion Kings squad, which finished the season with a 21-0 record and he also claimed 2004 Ohio State Doubles Championship along with numerous awards.
