The UW-Whitewater women’s tennis team has received a bid to play in a regional of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship, hosted by Gustavus Adolpus College in St. Peter, Minnesota Thursday-Saturday. The Warhawks received a first round bye and will play the winner of twenty-fourth ranked Wheaton College (17-4) and Edgewood College (11-5) Saturday.

UW-Whitewater’s match is set to start Friday, May 14 at noon after receiving a bye Friday as the number two seed in the regional.  The other half of the region consists of the number eight team in the nation, Gustavus (20-4) and a first round match between St. Norbert College (8-7) and twenty-fifth ranked Luther College (25-5).  Gustavus, the number one seed, will play the Saint Norbert-Luther winner Saturday.  The regional final is set for noon Sunday.  The winner of the Gustavus Regional will join seven other regional winners for the NCAA III final championship series May 25-27 in Fredricksburg, Virginia.

Host Gustavus is making their twenty-second consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. In a match earlier this year, the Warhawks fell to Gustavus 7-2.

The twenty second nationally ranked Warhawks (20-4) have played Wheaton and Edgewood, defeating the Thunder 5-4, and topping Edgewood twice by 9-0 scores.

This regional showcases some of the top talent in the Central Region. Whitewater's Kalla Schaefer ranked eleventh in the region, and also shares the fifteenth ranked doubles team with partner Michelle Daciolas. Gustavus has two singles players in the top 25 in number six ranked Sierra Krebsbach and nineteenth ranked Marianne Barau, while Wheaton has the fourteenth ranked singles player in Elizabeth Worsowicz. Gustavus also has two doubles teams in the top 15, sixth ranked Krebsbach and Sam Frank and also twelfth ranked Barau and Megan Gaard.  Wheaton duo of Worsowicz and Kayli Edwards is ranked ninth.

This is Whitewater’s third trip to the NCAA tournament. In 2009 the Warhawks were defeated in the first round by Wheaton 5-0, and in 2008 Whitewater lost in the second round to Gustavus 6-0.
