FORT WORTH- The Texas A&M freshmen duo of Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant knocked off fellow teammates Alberto Bautista and Jackson Withrow, 8-5, in the double championship at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships to claim a spot in New York at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships later this year.
Call it a Texas Aggie two-step, but one thing was for certain for head coach Steve Denton, a Texas A&M doubles team would advance to New York based on outstanding play by all of the Aggie doubles teams this past weekend at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships being held at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth. In addition to Harrison-Adams and Bautista-Withrow, the Aggie doubles team of Jordan Szabo and Jeremy Efferding made the semifinals so Texas A&M had three of the four remaining doubles teams.
"We were very excited to have three of the four teams in the semis," Denton said. "We are certainly further along in our doubles at this point of the year."
"We also had a great effort by Jordan Szabo to reach the quarterfinals in singles play with three solid wins. We had some others step up in singles but we still have a lot of room for improvement. This fall we are really looking for someone to step up and earn the top spot in our singles lineup," Denton added.
Aggie freshmen duo of Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant were seeded No. 3 in the field and knocked off the top-seeded tandem from Texas in Chris Camillone and David Holiner, 8-5, to advance to Monday's championship final.
On the other side of the bracket, another Aggie duo of junior Alberto Bautista and sophomore Jackson Withrow defeated another Aggie tandem of Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo, 9-8, to advance to the title match.
Schools from across the state of Texas, which make up the ITA Texas Region, will be in Fort Worth for one of the fall's premiere college tennis events. The Texas Region is one of 12 ITA regions that will send players to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships.
The winners of the singles and doubles draw advanced to the aforementioned USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships, which are set for Nov. 8-10 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
