College Tennis News - Bulldogs To Host Clemson For Midweek Match

ATHENS, Ga. --- The sixth-ranked University of Georgia men’s tennis team (2-0) will host No. 61 Clemson in a midweek match this Thursday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility.

The Bulldogs are back in action following a pair of wins last weekend at the ITA Kickoff to start the dual match season.

LOOKING AT CLEMSON: Clemson heads to Athens sporting a 5-0 record, most recently capturing a 4-0 upset victory over 51st-ranked Brown on the road last weekend.

The Tigers are led by No. 75-ranked Yannick Maden’s 10-3 singles record, including a mark of 4-0 at the No. 1 spot. Hunter Harrington owns the second-most wins on the squad at 7-3. The doubles team of Yannick and Dominique Maden are ranked No. 18 nationally and enter at 15-3 overall and 5-0 at No. 1 in dual matches.

SERIES HISTORY: Georgia owns a 39-10 all-time record against its border rival, including a 7-0 win in last season’s dual match opener on Jan. 21, 2012.

LAST TIME OUT: The Georgia men’s tennis team started its dual match season with a pair of wins over the weekend, defeating Vanderbilt 4-3 Friday and VCU 5-1 Saturday at the ITA Kickoff in Athens. The victories gave the Bulldogs a place in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month in Seattle, marking the 10th straight season the Bulldogs have reached the elite field of 16 that will play for a national championship.

In the pair of season-opening wins, Georgia’s senior and No. 8-ranked KU Singh as well as freshman Ben Wagland each went 2-0 in singles on the weekend, while Georgia’s doubles teams of Wagland and Hernus Pieters - No. 5 nationally - as well as the team of Singh and Nathan Pasha each went undefeated.

IN THE RANKINGS: Georgia remained No. 6 in the ITA team rankings for the second week this spring on Jan. 22. With that, the Bulldogs have now been ranked in the top six every week since May 2, 2011 and in the top-10 since March 29, 2011.

Individually, Georgia boasts three players in the singles top 20 in KU Singh (No. 8), Hernus Pieters (No. 16), and Nathan Pasha (No. 19). In doubles, the team of Pieters and freshman Ben Wagland are No. 5 while Wagland is No. 29 with Pasha.

ON DECK: The Bulldogs are on the road for their next two dual matches, traveling to take on No. 4 Ohio State on Sun., Feb. 3 before meeting in-state foe Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Feb. 8.
