CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Seventh-ranked Zsofi Susanyi won her singles match to clinch seventh-ranked California's 4-0 win over No. 16 Michigan on Friday night in the Golden Bears' opener at the ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship. Fifth-seeded Cal moves on to play fourth-seeded and sixth-ranked Georgia at 12:30 p.m. PT/3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the tournament held at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Susanyi, a sophomore, defeated Michigan's Emina Bektas, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, on court one. The Cal All-American also paired with freshman Klara Fabikova to clinch the doubles point for Cal earlier in the night.
"It was a well-played match, and we fought hard," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Everybody competed hard today. They played aggressively against us and were more used to playing indoors. It was also a long day, but the players handled that well."
Tonight marked the first meeting between the two teams - and the first time that Augustus faced the program she previously coached before returning to her alma mater.
"We've competed against some of their players, but it was the first time we've played them as a team," she said. "It was a little bit strange, but at the same time kind of cool."
Susanyi, a sophomore, defeated Michigan's Emina Bektas, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, on court one. The Cal All-American also paired with freshman Klara Fabikova to clinch the doubles point for Cal earlier in the night.
Cal opened the match with junior Anett Schutting and freshman Lynn Chi claiming the first victory - 8-2 over Sarah Lee and Ronit Yurovsky in court-two doubles. The Wolverines evened the slate when Mimi Nguyen and Amy Zhu beat Cal junior Kelly Chui and sophomore Cecilia Estlander, 8-5, on court three. In a tight match, Susanyi/Fabikova edged the 21st-ranked team of Bektas/Brooke Bolender, 8-7, to earn the doubles point for the Bears.

Chi - ranked at No. 109 nationally in singles - also claimed the first singles win of the night, 7-5, 6-2, against Bolender on court three. Fabikova followed with a 6-2, 6-3, result against Lee on court four, before Susanyi decided the match on court one.
Georgia beat Texas, 4-2, to earn the right to meet Cal on Saturday.
