ITHACA, N.Y. – A day after knocking off archrival Yale in a first-round matchup, the Harvard men's tennis team fell to Ivy foe Cornell, 4-2, on the second day of the ECAC Men's Indoor Championships Saturday. Harvard started the tournament as the No. 1 seed, and the host Big Red held the fourth seed in the event.
Doubles play started well for the Crimson as the top team of Denis Nguyen and Casey MacMaster dominated Cornell's Venkat Iyer and Alex Sidney to the tune of an 8-2 win. The Big Red responded on the third court with Kyle Berman and Sam Fleck teaming to beat Alex Steinroeder and Shaun Chaudhuri, 8-5. The battle on the second court culminated in a tiebreaker, and Cornell's Jason Luu and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen edged Andy Nguyen and Nicky Hu, 8-7 (4), to give Cornell the doubles point.
Steinroeder got Harvard on the board with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sidney on the third court in singles action, but Cornell's Luu responded with a 6-2, 6-4 win of his own over Hu at No. 5. MacMaster, playing at sixth singles, gave Harvard its second point, taking a first set tiebreaker in a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over Berman. Iyer proved to be too strong for Denis Nguyen at first singles with a 6-2, 7-5 victory, and Quoc-Daniel Nguyen topped Andy Nguyen, 7-5, 6-3, to clinch the match for Cornell.
Harvard wraps up its stay at the ECAC Indoor event Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. match against third-seeded Princeton.
