TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a 5-2 victory over USF Sunday at the USF Varsity Courts.
The No. 25 Irish (14-8, 3-0 BIG EAST) earned the first point of the match during the doubles portion. The No. 60 team of Jennifer Kellner and Chrissie McGaffigan defeated Katie Vasenina and Loreto Alonso-Martinez 8-6 for the first Notre Dame win before the doubles point was clinched at the second court by the 62nd ranked duo of Britney Sanders and Julie Sabacinski. The Irish tandem downed Kayla Rizzolo and Danielle Mills 8-1.
The third doubles match between Quinn Gleason and Katherine White and USF’s Fanny Fracassi and Paula Montoya was not finished after Notre Dame claimed the doubles point.
Sanders, the No. 40 player in the ITA rankings, need three sets to defeat Vasenina at the first singles court. The Irish junior emerged with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Gleason won her team-best 17th singles match of the season at No. 3 singles against Mills. Gleason swept her USF counterpart 6-2, 6-0 in straight sets.
McGaffigan was victorious in her final regular season collegiate start, earning a hard-fought three-set win over Fracassi at the fourth singles court. McGaffigan responded after falling in the second frame with a 6-3 final set to win 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.
Freshman Julie Vrabel picked up her second victory in as many days at sixth singles, bouncing back from a 6-1 first frame setback against Alessandra Bonte to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in three sets.
The BIG EAST Championship will be held April 18-21 at the USF Varsity Courts.
