COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Washington men's tennis season came to an end on Saturday when they were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by Ohio State. The Buckeyes defended their home court by sweeping the Huskies, 4-0.
"We got beat by a very good team," said head coach Matt Anger. "They were the better team today without a doubt."
The Dawgs played without Friday's hero, Marton Bots. The Husky senior played through a sore back in the first-round win over Notre Dame, but could not loosen up on when he tried to hit balls before the match.
"Marton did everything he could to play," said Anger. "Last night I was feeling pretty good about it, but when he woke up this morning it was evident he was in a lot of pain. He tried to hit balls before the match, but after only one swing we had to shut him down."
Without Bots, the Dawgs had to move everyone up a spot in the lineup, while Rishabh Raman subbed in for doubles.
Washington battled hard in doubles, but dropped the point. Viktor Farkas and Max Manthou fell to No. 90 Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen, 8-4. Then at No. 1, No. 12 Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith defeated Emmett Egger and Jeff Hawke, 9-7. It was a game effort from Egger and Hawke against one of the top doubles pairings in the country.
In singles, Washington lost three-straight matches to ranked Buckeye opponents. No. 73 Devin McCarthy defeated Viktor Farkas, 6-1, 6-2, to start things off. Next, No. 71 Connor Smith defeated Egger, 6-2, 6-2. The clinching point came from No. 9 Peter Kobelt as he defeated Manthou, 6-2, 6-3.
The other matches went unfinished, although both Kyle McMorrow and Hawke were very alive with a chance to win.
"Kyle was really fighting hard and he was playing with a bad back too," said Anger. "Actually, last night I thought Kyle was going to be more sketchy to play than Marton."
The loss ends the Huskies season with a record of 18-12. The Dawgs advanced to their 19th-consecutive NCAA Tournament and for the third-straight season advanced out of the first round.
"When I look back on a season, I always think about the seniors and the great wins they have had for us," said Anger. "I also look ahead and realize that we have some really good young players returning."
