URBANA, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Kate Turvy saw her collegiate career come to a close Wednesday at the 2013 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship at Atkins Tennis Center.

Turvy, a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection who entered the match ranked No. 57 in the ITA singles rankings, squared off against sixth-ranked and sixth-seeded Lauren Herring of Georgia and the Wildcat fell by a score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

The match began nearly two hours after its scheduled start time following a rain delay. Competing in her second-consecutive NCAA Singles Championship, Turvy fell behind by a break early in the opening set as Herring won each of the first three games. Turvy got on the board to make it 3-1, but Herring was able to win each of the next three games to close out the first set.

However, the Wildcat was able to bounce back in the second set. The stanza was on serve with Turvy trailing 2-1 when she held and then got the break that she needed. Turvy would break Herring once again to take the set, 6-3, setting up a decisive set to advance to the round of 32.

The final set was on serve with Turvy trailing 2-1 once again, but Herring managed to break twice to increase her lead to 5-1. Refusing to go quietly, Turvy got one of the breaks back to get within 5-3. The Bulldogs' sophomore was able to close things out, though, as she held serve to move on in the tournament.

Northwestern will be represented in the NCAA Doubles Championship in Thursday's opening round as the 14th-ranked duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton take on the second-seeded team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC at a time that will be determined Wednesday evening.
