STANFORD, Calif.- Stanford’s NCAA champion women’s tennis team was honored in a pregame tribute on Saturday night prior to the San Francisco Giants game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at AT&T Park.

Cardinal players, coaches and support staff were recognized as part of the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative (BAWSI) ceremony, along with the California women’s basketball team, which reached the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history.

Senior Kristie Ahn, sophomore Krista Hardebeck and sophomore Lindsey Kostas were honored along with Nicole Gibbs, who elected to forego her senior season and turn pro after winning her second straight NCAA singles title in May. Head coach Lele Forood (avid Giants fan and longtime season ticket holder) and associate head coach Frankie Brennan were presented with replica jerseys.

The most storied program in college tennis, Stanford defeated No. 3 Texas A&M in a 4-3 thriller to capture this year’s NCAA crown. No. 12 Stanford (22-4, 8-2 Pac-12) became the lowest-seeded team to win an NCAA title, also knocking off No. 5 USC, No. 4 Georgia and No. 1 Florida along the way. The championship also extended Stanford's record streak of 37 years in a row with at least one NCAA title and paved the way for a 19th consecutive Directors' Cup.

BAWSI is a public benefit, nonprofit corporation with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health, hope and wholeness to our community. Founded in 2005 by Olympic and World Cup soccer stars Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy, along with Marlene Bjornsrud, former general manager of the San Jose CyberRays women's professional soccer team, BAWSI provides a meaningful path for female athletes to become a more visible and valued part of the Bay Area sports culture.
