SKILLMAN, N.J. - Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane have been named to the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Star Team, which was announced on Friday afternoon. The duo is just one of three NCAA Division I teams to earn the honor.
Featuring 20 of the nation's top student-athletes from tennis programs across the nation, the ITA All-Star Team was inaugurated in 1984. The All-Star Team features the nation's top-ranked men's and women's players from the year-end ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO levels, as well as winners of the 2012 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and 2013 NCAA Division I Championships.
Guarachi and Macfarlane put together the most decorated season for a doubles team in Alabama history, which was capped off by a trip to the NCAA Doubles Championship semifinals. The All-Americans knocked off 13 nationally-ranked opponents, including the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Championship in Georgia's Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia. Guarachi and Macfarlane compiled an overall record of 27-10 in 2013, going 15-7 in dual match play.
Despite coming together to form the Crimson Tide's No. 1 doubles team in the fall, Guarachi and Macfarlane had much success early on, winning the ITA Southern Regional Doubles Championship, reaching the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and the quarterfinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. They reached as high as No. 2 in the national rankings and finished the season No. 1 in the southern region.
The 2013 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team awards presentation will take place at the ITA Awards Luncheon hosted by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) during Arthur Ashe Kids' Day, immediately before the start of the US Open. The luncheon is held in the President's Suite Dining Room at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
