WICHITA, Kan. - - Freshman men's tennis player Jarryd Woog redshirted the spring semester to adjust to college tennis and the wait is starting to pay off. The Memphis native won the ITA Summer Circuit Event at Wichita State University over the weekend, not dropping a set en route the men's singles title.

Woog opened his tournament run with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of John Brown's William Cheek. He then took out Nebraska freshman Court Clark, 6-4, 6-3. Clark was a finalist at the first ITA Summer Circuit event at UMKC last week. Woog then defeated the other finalist (and tournament champion) from that UMKC event, taking down Vinh Pham, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the finals of the Wichita State event.

In the finals, Woog needed a first set tiebreak, but prevailed 7-6 (3) over Johnson County CC sophomore Spartak Rahachou in the first set. He closed out the win with a 6-0 sweep in the second set to claim the tournament title.

Organized in 1993, the ITA Summer Circuit provides college players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. The primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshmen and college players the chance to compete in the summer months. For NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as open, meaning they are open to any player, as long as the participants are current ITA members.
