MIDLAND, Texas - Boise State senior Andy Bettles opened his 2013-14 campaign in style this weekend winning the singles title at the prestigious Midland Racquet Club Intercollegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas. The Somerset, England, native also advanced to the doubles championship where he and teammate Brendan McClain were defeated. Over the three day tournament the four Broncos competing in the event went a combined 11-3 in singles and 5-2 in doubles.
Bettles entered the tournament as the preseason 21st-ranked player in the nation. On his march to the title as the No. 2 seed in the competition he defeated the No. 7, No. 4 and No. 1 seeds in order. All five matches he won at the tournament were in straight sets. After defeating Texas Tech’s Felipe Soares 6-2, 6-3 in Sunday’s semifinals, he knocked off Soren Hess-Olesen from the University of Texas, ranked 10th nationally, 6-2, 7-5 for the championship.
In today’s doubles championship, the Bronco tandem of Andy Bettles and freshman Brendan McClain lost 8-3 to Wichita State’s team of Illija Curic and Tin Ostojic.
Two other Broncos were in action as well today in the consolation brackets. Junior Garrett Patton defeated Rodolfo Bustamante from TCU 6-2, 7-5 in the final of his consolation bracket. Meanwhile, sophomore Brian Foley won his second match of the tournament 6-3, 6-4 over TCU’s Will Stein.
