CARY, N.C. -- The Texas A&M women’s tennis team opened its fall season at the Duke Fab Four Invitational, Friday-Sunday, at the Cary Tennis Center. Other teams competing in the three-day event were Alabama, Florida, Furman, Miami, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas and William & Mary.

“This weekend’s competition was enormously productive for our group,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “Our debutantes acquitted themselves very well with Rutuja (Bhosale) and Jana (McCord) picking up wins in singles against strong players. Mason performed nicely and our returners played well, too.”

Bhosale, a freshman, got a ranked singles win in her A&M debut, defeating 92nd-ranked Tessa Lyons of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-1, in a first-round match. McCord, also a freshman, picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Tarheels’ Laura Slater in the consolation quarterfinals.

Sophomore Anna Mamalat also notched a ranked win, defeating 69th-ranked Clementina Riobueno of Miami, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3, in the consolation quarterfinals.

Bhosale and sophomore Ines Deheza advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles, defeating No. 42 Ashley Dai and Tessa Lyons of North Carolina, 8-7 (5).

Next up for the Aggies is the prestigious Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships, which open Sept. 28 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
