NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Brandon Fickey lost in the fourth round of the SEC Fall Classic to end the Vols' main tournament run Friday.
Fickey was the only Vol to win his first match of the day -- doing so convincingly in straight sets -- before falling to No. 65 William Kallberg of Ole Miss 6-3, 6-3.
Even though the Vols are through with main draw competition, Tennessee's tournament stay is not over just yet.
Senior Jarryd Chaplin lost his season-opening match Thursday and was placed in the consolation draw. He beat Kentucky freshman Nils Ellefson 7-6, 6-2 to advance to Saturday's third-round consolation.
"What some people don't understand is even though I'm a senior, I was still nervous yesterday," Chaplin said. "I was fighting my own demons a bit, so I was happy with the way I was able to turn it around today because he was a good player. I felt more and more like myself as the match went on."
The morning was a rough one for the Vols. Fickey won his third-round match 6-2, 6-1 over Joseph Van Dooren to make it to the round of 16, but three of his teammates lost.
Junior Hunter Reese, the tournament's No. 3 seed, fell to Georgia's Austin Smith 6-1, 6-2. Tennessee freshmen Markus Kerner and Sean Karl both went down in straight sets as well. Kerner lost 6-0, 6-3 to Florida's No. 1 Florent Diep 6-0, 6-3. Karl lost to Auburn's Lukas Ollert 6-4, 6-0.
"We understand we have a lot of work to do, but there are some bright points," Chaplin said. "Right now the mindset is if we're getting better every day, it puts us on the right path. I don't think anyone was happy with losing, especially in the fashion we did this morning."
