SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Thomas Tenreiro has reached the singles semifinals at the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco. This afternoon the sophomore won a pair of matches defeating Hunter Nicholas from San Diego State in a three-set battle 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (3) in the round of 16, then followed with a straight-set victory over Santa Clara’s Ilya Ostinev 6-4, 6-1 to advance into Sunday’s semifinals. Tenreiro the 123rd-ranked singles player nationally will face Campbell Johnson from Cal. Tenreiro is the only Bronco left in either the main draw for singles or doubles.
Boise State advanced both doubles teams into the quarterfinals Friday night, on Saturday one survived and one lost in the quarterfinals. The tandem of Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton moved into the semifinals with a tie break victory over Santa Clara’s team of John Lamble and Ilya Ostinev 8-7 (3). The Bronco duo of Thomas Tenreiro and Toby Mitchell fell in the quarterfinals early Saturday to Thorsten Bertsch and Hunter Nicholas from San Diego State 8-4.
That setup a semifinal match-up between the Boise State’s McClain-Patton and SDSU’s Bertsch-Nicholas in Saturday night’s semifinal contest. Unfortunately, the Aztec pair downed the Broncos duo 8-5 in the semifinal.
In consolation singles matches featuring Broncos Toby Mitchell lost to Pepperdine’s Stefan Menichella 6-2, 6-3, while Brendan McClain fell in straight sets as well to Cal Poly’s Marco Comuzzo 6-3, 6-2. Mitchell played one more match Saturday defeating the University of San Diego’s Andrew Raphaelson in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
