LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State has been dominating on the first two days of the 2013 USTA/ITA Men’s Tennis Mountain Region Championships at the Darling Memorial Tennis Center in Las Vegas. After two days five of seven Broncos Andy Bettles, Thomas Tenreiro, Garrett Patton, Brendan McClain and Toby Mitchell have advanced to the round of 16 in singles and two doubles teams Bettles/Tenreiro and Patton/McClain have reached the round of 16 as well. In all Boise State is a combined 17-2 in singles matches and 4-1 in doubles, including going undefeated on Thursday 8-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.

To put in perspective how well the Broncos are doing they have five players in the singles round of 16, no other team has more than two. Unfortunately for Boise State the Broncos seeding ensures that a maximum of three can advance to the quarterfinals after tomorrow. Four Broncos will face off against each other on Friday with Tenreiro taking on McClain, while Patton and Mitchell square off. The plus side is that Boise State is guaranteed two spots in the quarterfinals.

Andy Bettles can provide Boise State with a third Bronco in the quarterfinals. The senior is ranked 21st nationally and is the No. 1 seed at the regional. After a first round bye he has swept through his first two opponents with relative ease winning both in straight sets defeating Weber State’s Sanjay Goswami 6-3, 6-2 and Idaho State’s Bjorn Scheepbouwer 6-2, 6-0. Bettles will now face the No. 16 seed Tamas Batyi from UNLV in Friday’s round of 16.

Tenreiro entered the tournament nationally ranked as well at 123rd and is the No. 8 seed at the regional. The sophomore from Miami, Fla., has won both of his contests following a bye in the round of 128. Tenreiro defeated James Hignett from New Mexico Wednesday night 6-3, 6-3, he was then forced to rally from one set down to claim a hard fought victory Thursday over Montana’s Andrew Warren 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance into the round of 16. He will face teammate Brendan McClain tomorrow with the winner moving into the quarterfinals and the other being eliminated.

After two days Patton has been impressive with three straight set victories of his own. He opened with wins over New Mexico’s Bryan Cunningham 6-0, 6-2 and Nevada’s Quentin Mege 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday, then followed with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over No. 25 seeded Devin Lane from Utah today. The junior from Boise will take on teammate Toby Mitchell on Friday in the round of 16.

McClain had to win three matches over the last two days to setup his encounter with fellow Bronco Thomas Tenreiro Friday afternoon in the round of 16. The true freshman has been dominating through the first three rounds winning all in straight sets. Wednesday opened with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Utah State’s Fredrik Peterson then closed with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Montana State’s Niklas Brandes in the round of 64. Today he upset No. 13 seed Liam Goldberg from New Mexico 6-4, 6-1.

The fifth  Bronco in the round of 16 is Toby Mitchell who will meet Patton tomorrow. The sophomore has advanced through the first three rounds with wins over Air Force’s Jack McCullers (6-3, 6-3) and a upset victory over the No. 7 seeded Gilad Berman from UNLV in a tough three-set match 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, both on Wednesday. Today the Somerset, England, native downed Montana State’s Javier Martin-Morillas 6-2, 6-0.

Brian Foley and Abe Hewko are both battling in the consolation bracket. Foley opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Weber State’s Todd Fought before losing a heartbreaker to Andrew Poustie of Nevada in three, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 in the round of 64. Today he won his first consolation match over Matt Oddonetto of Idaho 6-2, 6-2. Foley will face Montana’s Mikolaj Caruk tomorrow.

Hewko lost his opening match to No. 22 seeded Andrev Gorvachkov from BYU 6-0, 7-5 on Wednesday. He has since won two contests to advance through the consolation bracket by defeating Weber State’s Dylan Hansel 6-4, 6-2 and New Mexico State’s Marc Westgate 6-4, 6-4.

Boise State’s doubles teams have gone 4-1 overall and 3-0 on Thursday. Bettles and Tenreiro are seeded third and had a first round bye. They opened by defeating New Mexico’s Tanner Berkabile and Mitch McDaniels 8-1 today. The duo will now face Montana State’s Kenny Dodd and Javier Martin-Morillas on Friday.

The team of Patton and McClain are 2-0 so far with victories over Josh Goodwin and Cody Miller of Idaho State (8-0) and Air Force’s Lucas Fumagalli and Steven Young (8-4). The two will now face the team of Mads Hegelund and Andy Van Der Vyver from New Mexico Friday morning.

The third doubles team is Foley and Mitchell who are 1-1 so far. They opened with a 8-6 loss on Wednesday to Idaho’s Odon Barta and Artemiv Nikitin, then rallied today with a 8-6 victory over Montana’s Zach Drost and Ethan Vaughn. The duo moves into the second round of the consolation bracket against Denver’s Alex Clinkenbeard and Aidan Talcott.
