Flushing, N.Y. - UCLA's Robin Anderson and Clay Thompson are each two wins away from winning one of the biggest tournaments of the year, as both players picked up a pair of victories on Friday at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Anderson, who is the defending ITA Indoor singles champion, began her day with a 6-3, 6-1 round of 16 win over Valentine Confalonieri of Lynn University. She followed that performance up with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over eighth-seeded Silvia Garcia of Georgia in the quarterfinals. Awaiting the second-seeded Anderson in Saturday's quarterfinals is seventh-seeded Hayley Carter of North Carolina. The two players will square off at Noon (EST).

Thompson, the No. 6 seed in the men's draw, also notched a pair of straight-set wins on Friday, downing both Carlos Lopez Villa of Old Dominion and second-seeded Guillermo Alcorta of Oklahoma by the same 6-4, 6-2 scores. He will next face unseeded Axel Alvarez of Oklahoma in Saturday's semifinals at 1:00 p.m. (EST).

The only other main draw matches for the Bruins on Friday were on the women's side. In singles, Chanelle Van Nguyen suffered a 7-5, 6-4 loss to top-seeded Jamie Loeb of North Carolina in the second round, while Jennifer Brady, who beat Virginia's Rachel Pierson, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round, ultimately fell in the round of 16 to North Carolina's Carter, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

In doubles, top-seeded Brady and Catherine Harrison of UCLA lost to USC's Giuliana Olmos and Zoe Scandalis, 8-4 in the second round of the women's doubles draw.
