April 29th Coaches Poll - Trojans Claim Top Spot

USC was awarded the #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The April 29th CTO/MDTA Division 1 Men’s Coaches Poll has been released and for the third poll in a row Peter Smith’s USC Trojans (26-3) have claimed the top spot.  After claiming the Pac 12 regular season title the Trojans came up short in the Pac 12 Championship falling to UCLA 4-2.  USC was awarded the #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and will host Idaho in the 1st round and then they will face the winner of the Oklahoma State/Michigan match in the 2nd round.

We have a tie for the 2nd spot in the poll with the Big 10 regular season and tournament champion Ohio State (30-3) Buckeyes and ACC regular season and tournament champion Virginia (23-2) Cavaliers both getting an equal number of votes.  Ohio State will be the #3 seed in the NCAAs and will host Bryant in the 1st round and then will face the winner of the Wake Forest/Louisville match.  Virginia will be the #4 seed in the NCAAs and will host Army in the 1st round and then will face the winner of the Penn State/UNC Wilmington match in the 2nd round.


UCLA (22-3) comes in at #4 after winning the Pac 12 Tournament Championship by knocking off USC 4-2 in the finals.  The Bruins will be the #6 seed in the NCAAs and will host Cal Poly in the 1st round and then will face the winner of the Boise State/San Diego match in the 2nd round.

Oklahoma (23-3) checks in at #5 after earning a share of the Big 12 regular season title.  Oklahoma advanced to the Big 12 Tournament Championship match before falling to Baylor 4-3.  The Sooners will be the #2 seed in the NCAAs and will host Montana in the 1st round and then will face the winner of the Harvard/Auburn match in the 2nd round.

Baylor (23-5) grabs the #6 spot after winning the Big 12 Tournament Championship with a thrilling 4-3 come from behind win over Oklahoma.  The Bears will be the #5 seed in the NCAAs and will host Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the 1st round and then will face the winner of the Stanford/Tulsa match in the 2nd round. 

Georgia (16-7), Texas (20-5), North Carolina (23-5), and Texas A&M (24-6) come in at 7-10. Illinois (22-8), Duke (19-6), Notre Dame (19-9), Kentucky (18-9), and Cal (15-7) are 11-15.  Vanderbilt (16-10), Columbia (20-1), Florida (15-9), Tennessee (17-10), and Boise State (28-4) fill the 16-20 spots.  Rounding out the final 5 spots are Mississippi State (17-10), Clemson (20-8), Oklahoma State (21-7), South Florida (20-8), and Memphis (13-5).

Also receiving votes but not garnering enough to make this week’s Top 25 are Wake Forest, Penn State, Florida State, NC State, and Harvard.
