WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
- Opening Match: No. 25 Boise State (28-4) opens the NCAA Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif., on Saturday, May 10, against the 39th-ranked San Diego Toreros (17-7), champions of the West Coast Conference.
- Match Information: The opening match begins at 10 a.m. (all times listed are Mountain) at UCLA’s Los Angels Tennis Center. It will be followed by the UCLA vs. Cal Poly match at 1 p.m.
- Possible Second Match: If the Broncos get past the Toreros they would face the winner of No. 5 UCLA and Cal Poly at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
No. 39 SAN DIEGO TOREROS (17-7)
- Overview: San Diego enters the tournament on a nine-match win streak and as champions of the West Coast Conference and with an overall record of 17-7 on the year. USD downed the Pepperdine Waves in the championship match of the WCC Tournament at San Diego on April 26.
- Singles: The Toreros are led by 58th-ranked Clarke Spinosa who went 14-7 on court one during spring duals and has a 21-10 record on the year. Uros Petronijevic is 12-7 at No. 2 singles and 22-11 overall, while Romain Kalaydjian is 8-5 on court three and 17-13 on the year.
- Doubles: Spinosa and Filip Vittek are ranked 39th nationally with a 15-4 record at No. 1 doubles and 18-5 on the year. Kalaydjian and Petronijevic have seen the most time on court two where they are 8-5 in duals.
- Last Meeting: The Broncos and Toreros last met in San Diego during the 2013 campaign when Boise State fell 5-2 to USD.
No. 5 UCLA BRUINS (22-3)
- Overview: The Bruins are the regional host seeded sixth in the tournament. They are ranked fifth nationally powered by a 22-3 overall record. UCLA has won 11 of its last 12 contests and upset top-ranked Southern Cal 4-2 in the championship match of the Pacific-12 Conference Tournament its last time out on April 26.
- Singles: UCLA has five singles players ranked among the nation’s top-100, including the top two in the country. Clay Thompson is ranked No. 1 with a 10-1 duals mark on court one and 37-5 record overall. Marcos Giron is second nationally splitting time between No. 1 (7-1) and No. 2 (5-1) singles in duals to go with a 22-4 overall record. Other ranked Bruins include: No. 35 Mackenzie McDonald (27-8), No. 71 Gage Brymer (25-6) and No. 95 Karue Sell (20-6).
- Doubles: UCLA is led by the 10th-ranked duo of Giron and McDonald who are 14-8 on the year and 43rd-ranked Giron and Sell who are 8-3 in doubles this fall while playing on court one.
- Last Meeting: UCLA and Boise State last met on Feb. 13, 2011 in Los Angeles when the sixth-ranked Bruins shutout the Broncos 7-0.
CAL POLY MUSTANGS (11-12)
- Overview: Cal Poly enters the NCAA Tournament with a 11-12 overall mark and as champion of the Big West Conference. The Mustangs defeated Hawaii 4-1 to win the Big West Tournament on April 27 to earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA regional.
- Singles: Marco Comuzzo and Ben Donovan have split time playing at No. 1 and 2 singles this spring. Comuzzo is 5-9 on court one, 4-2 on court two and 16-15 overall on the year, while Donovan is 6-2 at the one, 6-4 on court two and 17-10 overall.
- Doubles: Comuzzo and Matt Thompson are the only doubles team to play on court one this spring going 12-9 in duals and 12-11 overall on the year. Devin Barber and Corey Pang are the No. 2 doubles tandem going 8-6 on court two and 9-7 overall.
- Last Meeting: Boise State played at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on March 30 of this year when the Broncos ran past the Mustangs 6-1 to claim the road victory.

BRONCOS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
- On the Move: After winning their second-consecutive Blue Gray National Tennis Classic championship in Montgomery, Ala., on Feb. 23rd Boise State catapulted 26 spots from No. 41 up the national rankings to No. 15.
- Current: Boise State is ranked 25th in the latest (May 1) ITA rankings.
BRONCOS ADVANCE TO 17th NCAA TOURNAMENT
- 17th Appearance: The 2014 edition of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship will be the 17th all-time for the Broncos.
- Last 21 Years: It will also be the 17th time in the last 21 years, since the 1994 tournament, that Boise State has qualified for the championship event.
- Current Streak: This is the third straight appearance for Boise State.
- Under Patton: The Broncos have qualified for the NCAA tournament 15 times in coach Greg Patton’s 18 season’s at the helm of the program.
- No Dancing: The only years Boise State has not qualified since its first appearance in 1994 are: 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2011.
- Tournament Record: Boise State’s all-time record at the tournament is 7-16.
- Best Performance: The furthest the Blue and Orange has advanced was to the 1997 quarterfinals where they lost 4-3 to Mississippi.
- Advancing: The Broncos have won in the opening round six times. The most recent was in 2009 when they reached the round of 16 with victories over Middle Tennessee State (4-0) and Alabama (4-3), before falling to eventual tournament runner-up Ohio State (4-0).
BOISE STATE WINS THIRD MW TITLE
- Third MW Title: Boise State is fresh off defending its Mountain West championship April 24-27, as the Broncos swept through three matches on their way to a third-consecutive title.
- Title Defense: Boise State opened its title defense by dispatching Utah State 4-0 in the quarterfinals, then Nevada 4-2, followed by a 4-0 sweep of No. 68 New Mexico in the championship match.
- Perfection: The Broncos have never lost a match going 8-0 in the Mountain West Tournament since joining the league for the 2012 season.
- Dominance: Boise State has won all three MW titles by defeating the New Mexico Lobos in the championship match each season.
BRONCOS WIN 15th CONFERENCE TITLE
- Tournament Titles: Boise State’s third MW championship was the program’s 15th league tournament title all-time.
- Regular Season Titles: The Broncos also won the 2009 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) regular-season championship, but not the tournament title that year. This gives the Broncos 16 titles combined by tournament and regular season means.

BOISE STATE’S RECORD
- Record: Boise State’s overall record is 28-4.
- Fourth Most Wins: The 28 victories this season ranks as fourth most all-time (records start with 1987 season). The record is 31 in 2005, followed by 30 in 1997 and 2007.
- Conference Record: The Broncos went undefeated at 5-0 in Mountain West play this spring.
- Win Streak: Boise State has an active 10-match win streak going.
- 20 Wins: This is the eighth time in the last 12 years, since Patton returned as coach, that the Broncos have won 20 or more matches in a season. It is the 12th time in Patton’s 18 years to reach 20 wins and the 16th time in the program’s last 28 years (since the 1987 season).
- The Broncos at Home: Boise State went 14-1 at home in 2014 and closed the regular season with an active 13-match win streak. The lone loss was in the second home contest to then-32nd-ranked Northwestern (5-2) at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
- Boise State on the Road: The Broncos are 14-3 on the road in 2014 with its three losses coming at then-seventh-ranked Baylor (Jan. 25) 4-0, a 5-2 loss at then-No. 43 Oregon (March 2), as well as at then-No. 52 Stanford (April 1) 4-0.
DOUBLES POINT SUCCESS
- Streak: Broncos have won 18 doubles points in a row.
- When Winning Point: Out of 32 team matches played, Boise State’s record when winning the doubles point is impressive at 26-5. Note: The doubles point against Stanford was not played because of weather conditions giving the Broncos 31 matches competing for the team point.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
- Road Trip: To Boise State’s credit it has played an extremely tough schedule which included five straight weeks on the road where the Broncos won nine consecutive matches before finishing the stretch 9-2, the two losses were in the first and last matches.
- NCAA Field: Boise State has played 10 schools who are in the 2014 NCAA Tournament going 6-4 against them. All four Bronco losses this season have come to teams in the tournament.
- Wins Over NCAA Field: Schools in the NCAA Tournament who Boise State defeated during the regular season include: Cal Poly, Clemson, Drake, Idaho, Montana and Virginia Tech.
- Losses to NCAA Field: All four schools who defeated Boise State this season are in the NCAA field and include: No. 32 Northwestern, at No. 7 Baylor, at No. 43 Oregon and at No. 52 Stanford. Note, the rankings are what they were at time of match.
- Record Versus Ranked Teams: The Broncos have faced 12 teams that were nationally ranked at the time of the match going 8-4 against them.
- Opponents Ranked: 21 of Boise State’s 32 matches to date have been against teams that have been ranked at some point during the season.
- Wins Over Ranked Teams: They have recorded eight victories over nationally ranked teams: No. 21 Clemson (4-3), No. 37 VCU (4-2), No. 36 Alabama (4-0), No. 66 BYU (4-3), No. 32 Drake (4-1) and No. 68 New Mexico (4-0) all away from Boise. They also defeated No. 42 Minnesota (5-2) and No. 46 Virginia Tech (4-3) in Boise. Note, the rankings are what they were at time of match.
- Notable Win: Boise State has played and defeated on the road current No. 56 Utah (5-2) who was not ranked at the time of the match.
- In and Out of Rankings: The Broncos have also defeated Air Force (7-0), Marquette (5-2), Middle Tennessee State (4-1), Nevada (4-2), San Diego State (4-3), UC Irvine (5-2) and Washington (6-1) who were not ranked at time of match, but have been in and out of the rankings this year.
ITA ATTENDANCE RANKINGS
- March Attendance: For the first time the ITA tracked home attendance in 2014. The Bronco men came in sixth for the month of March in total attendance at 1,640 and eighth in average attendance at 273.
- Entire Season: On the year Boise State ranked eighth in total attendance for the entire season at 2,250.

BETTLES NATIONALLY RANKED
- Ranking: Bronco senior Andy Bettles has been ranked nationally all season in singles and enters the weekend ranked 87th nationally with and overall mark of 23-15.
BETTLES IN NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP
- Invited to the Dance: Boise State’s Andy Bettles will compete in the NCAA National Men’s Tennis Singles Championship Tournament for the second-consecutive year.
- Last Year: Yannick Hanfmann of Southern Cal defeated Bettles, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.
- Elite Club: The senior from Somerset, England, is only the 11th Bronco all-time to qualify to the NCAA singles championship.
- Automatic Berth: Bettles earned the Mountain West’s 2014 automatic berth into the tournament by finishing the regular season as the highest-ranked singles player out of the league in the ITA national rankings.
- 2014 Tournament Information: The singles championship competition will be conducted May 21-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 15-20. Georgia will serve as host.
- Past NCAA Participants: Other Broncos to participate in past NCAA singles championships are Damian Hume (2012), James Meredith (2010), Clancy Shields three times (2007-09), Luke Shields three times (2005-2007), Guillaume Bouvier (2004), Marcus Berntson (2003), Leif Meineke twice (1999-2000), Daniel Merkert (1998), Ernesto Diaz twice (1993, 1997) and Lee Galway (1989).
- All-Americans: Only two Broncos have earned All-American honors in singles Bouvier (2004) and Luke Shields (2007).
ITA REGIONAL RANKINGS
MOUNTAIN WEST HONORS FIVE
- Five Recognized: Five Broncos earned 2014 All-MW postseason honors, Andy Bettles, Nathan Sereke, Thomas Tenreiro, Brendan McClain and Garrett Patton.
- Double Honors: Senior Andy Bettles is a double honoree earning all-conference recognition in both singles and doubles. This is the third straight year (2012-14) he earned postseason honors in singles and second in doubles (2013-14).
- Singles: In addition to Bettles, senior Nathan Sereke was named All-MW in singles for the second time (2013-14) in his career. He has been a three-time all-conference honoree in doubles (2011-13).
- Doubles: Four Broncos earned all-conference honors in doubles, the team of Bettles and Tenreiro, as well as the tandem of McClain and Patton. It is the first time that Tenreiro, McClain and Patton have received postseason honors.

SELECT PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS
Andy Bettles
- Andy Bettles was nationally ranked all season entering this week at 87th in singles. The senior is 23-15 in singles this year and has won 108 matches (108-40) in his Bronco career.
- In doubles he is 24-7 this year with a career mark of 85-33.
- The native of Somerset, England, is a five-time All-Mountain West honoree, three-times in singles and twice in doubles.
- Bettles was also the 2013 MW Player of the Year and the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.
- He will be competing in his second straight NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship later this month in Athens, Ga.
- He was the 2013 Blue Gray National Tennis Classic MVP and the 2014 Sportsmanship Award winner.
- He has won 20-plus singles matches every season with a high of 32 as a sophomore.
- Won 19 or more doubles matches every year with a high of 24 this season.
- Last fall he won the Midland Intercollegiate singles championship (Sept. 13-15) and reached the semifinals of the ITA Mountain Region Championship (Oct. 16-20).
Nathan Sereke
- Sereke is a five-time All-Mountain West honoree earning recognition in singles twice (2013-14) and doubles three times (2011-13).
- MW Player of the Week for March 26.
- Singles record this year is 16-12 overall and 16-10 in duals playing primarily at No. 2 position.
- Won 20 or more singles matches in two of his four seasons as a Bronco going 27-10 as a sophomore and 20-13 as a junior. His career mark is 86-45.
- Won a career-high 22 (22-12) doubles matches as a sophomore with a career record of 79-39.
- Has teamed up with sophomore Toby Mitchell in doubles most of the dual season on court three where they are 10-3. The duo is 16-4 overall in duals this spring and have an active team-high 12-match win streak going.
Thomas Tenreiro
- 2014 All-Mountain West honoree in doubles.
- Two-time MW Player of the Week this spring (Feb. 5 and 12).
- Tenreiro’s singles mark on the year is 20-13 making it back-to-back seasons with 20-plus victories after going 24-3 as a freshman in 2012-13 ( which included a 19-match win streak to close the year).
- Doubles record on the year is 22-7 playing primarily with Andy Bettles (19-6) on courts one and two in duals.
Garrett Patton
- 2014 All-Mountain West honoree in doubles.
- MW Player of the Week for April 16.
- Tied for most singles wins on the team this year going 26-12 to date and 19-7 in duals playing primarily on court four.
- Patton has an active 10-match win streak in singles.
- In doubles he was paired most of the season with freshman Brendan McClain going 18-10 overall. They went 11-8 in duals playing at No. 1 and No. 2.
Brendan McClain
- 2014 All-Mountain West honoree in doubles.
- MW Player of the Week for Feb. 26.
- The standout freshman was the first Bronco to reach 20 wins this season and is currently tied for the team high at 26-9 on the year.
- McClain went and impressive 21-5 in duals this spring playing mainly on court five where he is 15-4.
- In doubles he was paired most of the season with junior Garrett Patton going 18-10 overall. They went 11-8 in duals playing at No. 1 and No. 2.
- Was named the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic Most Valuable Player (Feb. 21-23) going undefeated in singles and doubles during the competition to help the team win back-to-back BGNTC titles.
Toby Mitchell
- The sophomore has had a solid campaign going 23-7 in singles and 15-3 in duals playing primarily at the No. 5 and 6 positions.
- He has a team-best 12-match singles win streak intact entering the NCAA Tournament.
- Mitchell is 24-8 in doubles competition this year and 18-5 in duals.
- Has teamed up with senior Nathan Sereke in doubles most of the dual season on court three where they are 10-3. They are 16-4 overall in duals and have an active team-high 12-match win streak going.
Brian Foley
- The native of Henderson, Nev., is 21-9 in singles on the year and 14-5 in duals competing mainly at No. 5 (5-1) and No. 6 (8-4).
- In doubles Foley has gone 12-2 overall on the year with a 6-0 duals mark on court three with three different partners.
