ATHENS, Ga. - Boise State’s Andy Bettles, ranked 87th nationally, came up short at Athens, Ga., Wednesday afternoon where he fell in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to Virginia’s 46th-ranked Ryan Shane in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship Wednesday afternoon. The loss brings to a close the collegiate career of Bettles a senior from Somerset, England.
“I felt that Andy played a good match and that it was closer than the score would indicate,” said coach Greg Patton. “Andy left it all out there on the court and has nothing to be ashamed of, it just wasn’t his day. His opponent hit the ball extremely well and has one of the hardest shots in the NCAA. (Ryan) Shane was on today and he got his shots to fall, but Andy stood in there and battled hard. Andy has had a great career at Boise State and has been a vital part of this program. He has a great future ahead of him.”
Bettles has been one of the key forces behind Boise State’s success the last three seasons leading the Broncos to three consecutive Mountain West Conference championships and three straight NCAA tournament berths. Bettles finishes his career as a two-time NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship participant, the 2013 MW Player of the Year and a five-time All-MW honoree. His career marks at Boise State are 106-42 in singles and 83-36 in doubles.
