TULSA, Okla. - Boise State’s men’s tennis team opened the ITA All-American Championships strong sweeping five singles matches to remain undefeated. Toby Mitchell and Brendan McClain both won a pair of matches, while Garrett Patton, seeded sixth, had a first round bye then won his second round contest. All three Broncos were dominating winning four matches in straight sets.

“I am so excited about the way the guys played today against such tough competition,” said head coach Greg Patton. “They came out on fire and took down some great tennis players, that is why we come to events like this, to be the best you have to play the best. The guys knew it was going to be challenge and handled it well. We are undefeated after one day. Now we need to carry the momentum on into tomorrow’s matches.”

Toby Michell was the first to take the court this morning defeating Oral Roberts’ Jan Penhec in two sets 6-2, 6-1. Later in the afternoon he kept it going tallying a his second victory, this time in three sets over Maryland-Baltimore County’s (UMBC) Melker Svard 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Mitchell will face Matt Kirby from Tulsa Sunday morning in the third round.

Brendan McClain also claimed a pair of victories on Saturday, both in straight sets. He started with Southern Illinois’ Michal Kianicka handing his opponent a 6-3, 6-2 set back. In the afternoon the sophomore downed North Florida’s Yannick Zeurn with scores of 6-3, 6-4. On Sunday he will open with Wichita State’s Miroslav Heran at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain).

Boise State senior Garrett Patton was seeded sixth in the pre-qualifying stage and received a bye in the first round. When he did take the court he quickly rolled past Pavel Liska from the University of Hawai’i in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. The Boise native will now face Wake Forest’s Skander Mansouri at 10 a.m. (Mountain) in Sunday’s third round.
