LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Boise State came up short on Saturday at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend as Pepperdine rallied to win 4-2 over the Broncos at Los Angeles. The 34th-ranked Broncos claimed the doubles point and a singles victory by Lewis Roskilly to take a 2-1 lead, but could not hold on as the 53rd-ranked Waves rallied for the win with three straight singles victories. The loss drops Boise State to 1-2 on the year with a rematch versus Pepperdine on the schedule for next Sunday in Malibu, Calif.
Boise State opened the match by winning two of the three doubles contests to claim the team point. Abe Hewko and Brian Foley gave the Broncos the lead with a quick 6-2 win on court three over Pepperdine’s Pedro Iamachkine and Luca Marquard. The Waves came back to tie it at one win each when Tom Hill and Rakshay Thakkar defeated the Broncos’ Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro 6-4 on court two.
The decisive doubles match came down to court one where Toby Mitchell and Garrett Patton took down Pepperdine’s Guilherme Hadlich and Lautaro Pane 7-5 to hand the team point to the Broncos.
Pepperdine tied the team score at 1-1 when Thakkar tallied a straight-set victory over Boise State’s Patton 6-0, 7-5. Roskilly put the Broncos back on top with a two-set 6-2, 6-4 win on court five over Marquard.
The Waves then surged into the lead with back-to-back wins on courts four and one. Pepperdine’s Pane downed Foley in two as well by 7-5, 6-0 scores. Tenreiro fought hard but came up short in the end at No. 1 singles where he lost 6-4, 7-6 to Hadlich,
The decisive match came on court six where the Broncos’ Hewko battled from one set down to force a third, only to come up short in the end. Pepperdine’s Hill defeated Hewko 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to make the final score 4-2 in favor of the Waves.
Mitchell’s match on court three was suspended once the team victory was decided. He was trailing in the third set 7-6, 1-6, 1-3 to Iamachkine.
