MALIBU, Calif. – Garrett Patton won the final singles match of the day in three sets to hand Boise State a huge 4-3 road victory over Pepperdine Sunday afternoon in Malibu, Calif. The 45th-ranked Broncos were forced to rally twice in recording the win as they gained retribution for last weekend’s 4-2 loss to the 47th-ranked Waves in Los Angeles.

“I am so proud of these guys and the way they fought back today, we fought for our lives the entire time rallying twice,” said coach Greg Patton. “To defeat Pepperdine in Malibu is massive for our program they are such a solid program nationally. These guys believed in themselves today and proved that they are a good team. Garrett (Patton) was the man today, he knew it was up to him and he came through for us once again to get us the win. I just cannot say enough about this team and its heart, I am so proud.”

The day began with doubles where the Broncos rallied from one match down to win the team point. The Waves took the early lead on court three where Stefan Menichella and Tom Hill handed Boise State’s Brian Foley and Abe Hewko a 6-2 defeat.

Boise State rallied winning the team point for the second week in a row over Pepperdine. It started with Toby Mitchell’s and Garrett Patton’s 6-4 victory on court one over Pepperdine’s Lautaro Pane and Guilherme Hadlich. The Bronco tandem is now 3-1 in duals this semester.

The decisive win came on court two where Lewis Roskilly and Thomas Tenreiro put away Pepperdine’s Pedro Iamachkine and Rakshay Thakkar by the score of 6-4 to hand the Broncos the doubles team point.

The Waves came back on Boise State once singles were underway. Pepperdine swept the first two matches to surge into the lead 2-1. Boise State’s Tenreiro was defeated at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-3 by Hadlich. That was followed by a Waves victory on court three over Mitchell where Thakkar won 6-2, 6-0.

Boise State drew even when Hewko came away with a straight set 7-6, 6-4 victory over the Waves’ Hill on court six. Hewko is now 7-5 in singles this year and 2-1 in duals.

Pepperdine regained the lead at 3-2 following a three-set victory by Pane over Boise State’s Roskilly 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Moments later the Broncos pulled even once again when Foley tallied a two-set victory 6-3, 6-4 on court four over Iamachkine. Foley is now 2-2 in duals this semester.

That set up the decisive point on court two where Garrett Patton battled through three long sets before handing the Broncos the victory. The senior from Boise lost the opening set big 6-1 before rallying against No. 125 Stefan Menichella to clinch the team victory with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win. The victory improved Patton’s singles record to 7-4 this year and 2-1 in duals.

Next week Boise State will continue its five weeks on the road with a trip to Evanston, Ill., where it will face No. 30 Northwestern and No. 32 Harvard.
