BOISE, Idaho (4/3/2015) – Boise State came up short Friday afternoon to Mountain West Conference rival New Mexico as the Broncos fell 4-1 at the Appleton Tennis Center. Senior Garrett Patton led the Broncos by defeating his nationally ranked opponent in straight sets to improve to 16-9 overall. The loss dropped Boise State to 7-14 overall and 1-2 in league play.
“You just got to look at the good things, we are learning from this experience. We are fighting hard and are close, but things just have not come together for us,” said coach Greg Patton. “Give New Mexico credit they have a good team and took advantage of their breaks. We want to win out the rest of the season, we have six matches left, I challenged the team after the match, we have to win out. We are desperate now and desperation can create greatness, desperation is a good thing. Now we have to answer the challenge.
New Mexico claimed the doubles point by sweeping all three matches by 6-4 scores to take the early lead.
The Lobos then extended their advantage to 2-0 with a two-set victory on court six. Lewis Roskilly fell at No. 6 singles 6-2, 7-5 but fought back to make a match of it. After falling behind 5-1 in set two Roskilly battled back to within 6-5 before falling.
Patton made it 2-1 when he swept New Mexico’s top singles player who is ranked 61st-nationally. The Boise native defeated Samir Iftikhar 6-3, 6-2 on court one.
Unfortunately, that was it for the Broncos as the Lobos pulled out victories in the next two matches decided to clinch the team win.
“Our guys fought back again today, I thought Lewis (Roskilly) and Abe (Hewko) played hard and came back against adversity,” commented coach Patton. “Garrett (Patton) played extremely well and beat a nationally ranked opponent. We just have to have everyone hitting at the same time.”
It began on court three where Mitchell McDaniels downed Boise State’s Toby Mitchell in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. UNM then put the match away when Hayden Sabatka won a second-set tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6 (4) to defeat Thomas Tenreiro and end the match.
The final two singles contests were not finished once the victory was decided. However, Brian Foley was up on court four 6-4, 6-6, while Abe Hewko had rallied from one set down to win a second-set tiebreaker to push the match into a third. Hewko was up 1-6, 7-6(1), 1-0 on court five when play was stopped.
The Broncos will be back in action on Sunday when they host a doubleheader featuring Lewis-Clark State at 9 a.m. and Air Force at 1:30 p.m., both will be played at Appleton tennis Center weather permitting. If the weather turns bad they will be moved indoors to the Boas Tennis Center.
