AUSTIN, Texas – Despite a venue change, the second-ranked Baylor men’s tennis team continued its winning ways over Texas by besting the 10th-ranked Longhorns, 4-1, Wednesday at the Caswell Tennis Center.
The victory raised BU’s record to 19-4 overall, 3-1 in Big 12 action and 4-0 in true road matches, while the Longhorns fell to 18-4 and 2-2 in Big 12 play. It was only the second loss for Texas at home on the year.
The Bears have now claimed nine-straight victories over UT in Austin, although this was the first victory at the Caswell facility, after Texas’ long-time home, Penick-Allison Tennis Center, was closed last year.
BU continued its stellar play in doubles, improving to 21-1 in the doubles point on the season.
Felipe Rios and Vince Schneider opened doubles by downing Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.
Playing for the first time as a doubles pairing, Tony Lupieri and Max Tchoutakian produced a 6-4 victory on court 3 over Nick Naumann and Michael Riechmann. The Bears led the match 3-1 and then trailed 4-3, before getting two holds and a break to claim the victory.
In singles action, Texas would claim its lone point of the match as the 30th-ranked Lupieri was upset by No. 48 Lloyd Glasspool, 6-1, 6-4, on court two.
However, the setback was only a small one for the Bears as BU won every other first set on the five remaining courts.
The second-ranked Julian Lenz rebounded from a loss in his last decision to cruise past No. 5 Soren Hess-Olesen, 6-4, 6-2. Lenz jumped out to 4-2 lead in the match and then Hess-Olesen responded with a hold and a break to tie the match 4-4. Lenz fired right back to break the UT senior and then held to take the first set.
Baylor went up 3-1 on the Longhorns as senior Diego Galeano took out Goldhoff, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot.
The match ended as Rios claimed a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Naumann at the bottom of the lineup.

• BU has also taken eight of the last nine and 17 of the last 20 matches from Texas.
• Overall, Texas still leads the series, 40-20, but Baylor holds a 20-9 advantage during the Big 12 era.

WHAT’S NEXT
Baylor will now head to Lubbock, Texas, to face No.16 Texas Tech Saturday at 6 p.m. The Bears can claim at least a share of the Big 12 regular season title with a victory against the Red Raiders.
