The Wimbledon 2018 has been a roller coaster ride till now. With Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic progressing into the quarter-finals, the enthusiasm for the finals is increasing day by day. There have also been several disappointing moments in this Wimbledon. Many of the top seeded players like Simona Halep and much loved players like Sharapova have been eliminated from the tournament. However, few websites like the bookies offers have managed to provide accurate predictions to the gamblers which came as a relief to the fans and punters. Though the list goes long, here is our top pick for the worst upsets this Wimbledon 2018.
Simona Halep (Romania)
It was a shocking moment for every tennis fan when the World No. 1 was defeated by the World No. 23, Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan by 6-3, 4-6, 5-7. This was all the more surprising after Simona Halep had won the French Open recently in 2018. Her Taiwanese rival is mostly known for her doubles game and was never able to qualify past the third round in the singles bout.
The only match between the players prior to this Wimbledon was 5 years ago when Simona defeated Su-Wei in Cincinnati 5 years ago. In their latest brawl, Halep was progressing with a lead of 5-2, but Su-Weipicked up her game and won two sets in a row to win the game.
Marin Cilic (Croatia)
World Number 2 Marin Cilic has lost his chance towards the Wimbledon trophy to Guido Pella from Argentina by 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6(3)-7, 5-7. Cilic had good chance to win this Wimbledon considering his performance in the Queen’s Club Championship where he defeated Novak Djokovic and also his previous year’s performance in the Wimbledon Final.
In this match, Cilic commanded a lead of 2 sets on the first day, after which match was halted due to rains. The next day, his Argentinian opponent put up his strongest performance till date to stun everyone in the audience.
Garbine Muguruza
Another shock to the tennis fans came when World Seed 3, Garbine Muguruza was defeated by Alison Van Uytvanck by 7-5, 2-6, 1-6. The Spaniard was the defending champion this year and the runner up of the 2015 Wimbledon title which led to an increased anticipation from the crowd.
Garbine won the first set with a lead of two points, but lost her second and third sets at the hands of Alison who played risky shorts with her exceptional skills.
Alexander Zverev (Germany)
In a gruelling match against Ernests Gulbis from Latvia, Zverev lost by a score of 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-5, 3-6, 0-6. 3rd seed Zverev could not put up his best performance which was evident in the game. On the contrary the Latvian star played impressively to win three straight games in a row. Gulbis, prior to this defeated Federer in 2014 in the French Open and has been in the limelight since.
Maria Sharapova (Russia)
To the dismay of many, Maria Sharapova saw her exit from Wimbledon in her latest match with world number 138, Vitalia Diatchenko [7-6(3), 6(3)-7, 4-6]. Sharapova has won the coveted trophy for 5 times in the past but was involved in a drug ban, which seemingly took toll on her.
The match went on for about 3 hours, and 8 minutes with Maria taking the initial lead. Vitalia crawled back fast, to reach the deciding tie-breaker and registering a win. Incidentally, Vitalia is the lowest ranked player Sharapova has ever lost to.
