LOS ANGELES--Peter Smith, who served as head coach of the men’s tennis team for 17 seasons, has announced he is resigning effective Aug. 1 to pursue opportunities outside of college coaching.

Seventh-year associate head coach Kris Kwinta will step into Smith’s role while USC begins a search for a new head coach. He will provide support and outreach to the student-athletes during the transition process.

USC will conduct a national search for a new head coach. The athletic department is committed to continuing the Trojans’ men’s tennis program’s unprecedented success on the court and in the classroom.

The 2019 team went 22-8 overall, won the Pac-12 Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16.

“I would like to thank USC for the opportunity,” Smith said. “Thank you to my players and assistant coaches for the journey. I will miss so many wonderful people that helped us.”

While Smith was head coach from 2003-2019, the team posted a 381-105 dual match record. The teams won four consecutive NCAA crowns from 2009 to 2012 and then captured the university’s 100th NCAA team title in any sport when the Trojans won in 2014. The team made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances during those 17 seasons.
