August 13, 2008

 Irvine, CA

The UC Irvine Men’s Tennis Team was named to the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Associations All-Academic Team list that was released on August 8, 2008. This honor was bestowed on only 41 programs throughout the country.  There were four team members recognized individually as Scholar Athletes for there efforts in the classroom.

“This is a great accomplishment not only for UCI Tennis, but for those individuals that put forth such a great effort on and off the court. This is one of the goals that we set forth every year to accomplish; a goal that is not easy with the season running from the first day of class until the last. The guys on the team have great pride in there studies and put up a huge effort to keep everything in line this season,” said Coach Kronemann.

Ryan Mayer, Andrew Bertolina, Douglas Taylor and Victor Lamm led the individual charge for the Anteaters. The other members of the team include: Shimpeii Suzuki, Trevor Dobson, Zach Tsai, Ajay Ahluwalia, Khunpol Issara, Gautam Vaidyanathan, Sam Gould, Alex Sundling and Stephen Stege. This is the same team that earlier in the year captured the 2008 Faculty Representative Award on campus for the Highest GPA for any sport at UC Irvine. “We are thrilled with the accomplishments of the team in the classroom and look forward to maintaining that excellence as we move towards the future at UCI,” said Coach Kronemann.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2007 and spring 2008).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
