MONROE, La. – The Warhawk tennis team forced a split in singles, but a come-from-behind Trojan win in doubles gave visiting UALR a 4-3 win at Raymond Heard Stadium on the campus of ULM Friday evening.

ULM (4-4, 0-1 Sun Belt) swept through the bottom half of singles play and sophomore Claire Clark ran her unblemished record to 8-0 on the season with a straight set victory.

UALR (3-7, 1-1 Sun Belt) pulled ahead in doubles play and forced the split in singles with a third-set victory at number three to snap a two-game skid and claim the match.

“We gave this one away today,” ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “We had a golden opportunity to take the early lead and we didn’t finish. Today was an important lesson for our team. When you have somebody on the ropes, you have to finish them. We didn’t finish in doubles and that cost us the match.

For the Warhawks Clark and senior Marion Lehmann cruised to open tandem play, posting an easy 8-0 win in the third doubles position.

UALR would even the doubles point with an 8-2 win at the top spot. The Trojans took the early 1-0 lead in the match with their come-from-behind victory at number two. Trailing 7-4, the UALR tandem pushed the bout into a tie before coming out with the victory in the momentum shifting win.

The Trojans would extend their lead to 2-0 before the Warhawks could come back. Clark won at number five singles, 6-1, 6-3, and freshman Monica Winkel picked up a 6-4, 6-3 straight-set win at number four singles to even the match at 2-2.

UALR pushed ahead with a win at number two singles before Lehmann knotted the match once again with a 6-2, 7-6 win in the sixth slot.

Down a set and trailing 3-0 in the second, senior Sharon Makhanya won six-straight games to force a third set but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Warhawks will take a week off before returning to the court on March 13 when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., for a three-match weekend starting with Arkansas State.
